Senior Wine Associate, Premium Wine & Spirits

Ann’s interest in cooking was enhanced by a four year residence in a cooperative dormitory prior to graduation from William Smith College in Geneva, New York. When a friend gave her Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” wine entered her life. Trying the wines that Julia recommended opened the door to a new world. In pursuit of her passion, she joined wine societies. Research laboratories were her everyday world, but on vacation, she traveled to France, Italy, California and the wine regions of New York. Wine seminars in Burgundy, France and Tuscany and Piedmont Italy added to her knowledge and interest in wine, and especially in the pairing of food and wine. Fifteen years ago, she joined the Premier Group and her avocation became her vocation. In 1995, when Premium was opened, she joined the staff as a Senior Wine Associate. She is excited by the quantum leaps which have been made by the New York wine industry and wishes that more New York restaurants would serve New York wines. Her quests are “great wine and food combinations” and “delicious wine at great prices.” Ann says it’s impossible for her to choose a single favorite wine, since there are so many choices available today, but her favorite regions are Ribera del Duero, La Mancha, Piedmont, Rhone and New York’s Finger Lakes. She loves talking with customers and helping them find the wines they will enjoy.

"Spain has more vines planted than any other country and is a “gold mine” of wonderful and reasonably priced wines. Señorio de Barahonda was founded in 1925 and has some of the oldest Monastrell vineyards in Spain. In Yecla, there are hot days, cool nights and no rain. This wine, a blend of 70% Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvedre) and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, was aged for five months in French oak barrels. The restrained packaging hides a delightful, full-bodied wine with deep, intense garnet color, aromas of plum, red raspberry and cassis, and flavors of plum and cocoa. It is juicy, rich and bright with balanced acidity, smooth tannins and a long, elegant finish. Enjoy this fragrant, delicious wine with bacon-cheddar burgers, grilled swordfish or pot au feu."

"Some hat trick! A blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Shiraz, 20% Mataro (a.k.a. Mourvedre). This dark garnet wine has explosive aromas of ripe plum, raspberry, blackberry and cherry; full-bodied, rich flavors of crisp, juicy, spicy raspberry and cherry skate across the tongue, supported by underlying structure and enhanced by a long finish. Enjoy with brioche-wrapped leg of lamb with rice and kidney stuffing, grilled calves’ liver or blue cheese. He shoots, he scores, and so do you!"

"Monteregio di Massa Marittima is one of Italy’s newer DOC wines. The warm Tuscan sun produces rich, ripe grapes. The wine was matured for 12 months in small French oak barrels. The dense, ruby/purple-hued 2003 Sassabruna has aromas of ripe, red raspberries, sweet tobacco and cocoa, and flavors of cherry, raspberry, black pepper, dark chocolate and clove. This full-bodied, complex wine has smooth tannins, great depth and a long, elegant finish. As you enjoy the wine, it continues to evolve in the glass for an enriching experience. Serve with roast lamb, grilled calves liver or well-aged Parmigiano-Reggiano."

"This Puglian wine, named for the vineyard denizen Gazza Ladra (“Thieving Magpie”), is a steal! It is light gold in color, with orange and almond aromas, and flavors of pear, McIntosh apples and lime. This bright, crisp, round wine is medium-bodied with a juicy, long finish. Enjoy with grilled tilapia, chicken in mushroom cream sauce or fresh chevres, and crow about it to your friends."

"From the Rheinhessen, home of great Riesling wines, comes this Chardonnay ice wine. What a surprise! This is Chardonnay with the volume turned high and the edges as smooth as silk. it has intense Chardonnay fruit and flavors of apricot, peach, kiwi and aromas of roasted nuts and honey. The wine is lingering and smooth, sweet but not cloying with a bright finish. Enjoy as dessert or serve with creamy cheesecake or Grand Marnier soufflé."
